Description Perennials. rhizomes short, without stolons. Stems 30–70 cm tall, densely caespitose, smooth, trigonous. Leaves slightly longer than stems, flat, 3–6 mm wide, scabrous on margins. Basal sheaths dark brown, fibrillose. Involucral bracts leaflike, with long sheaths, upper bracts setaceous. Inflorescences terminal spikes male or gynecandrous, linear-clavate, 2–5 cm long; lateral spikes female rarely gynecandrous, linear-cylindrical, 2–5 cm long, densely flowered. Staminate scales brown, midrib light green, apex obtuse. Pistillate scales pale green, midrib light green, apex acuminate or aristate. Perigynia longer than pistillate scales, oblong-ovate, ca. 7 mm long, 5-veined, glabrous, apex gradually narrowed into a long beak, scabrous on margins of upper part and beak, mouth shallowly 2-toothed.
