Translation With linear-oblong spikes, thick, 1, with distant lax-flowered lower subterns, the lower part pedunculate, the others subsessile; bracts embracing eared, with the leaflet surpassing the lowest spike; the valves oblong with slightly pointed ends; perigynium with oval compressed glumes that are glabrous; with a very short beak and entire mouth; stem triangular, leaves flat with rough margins; with a creeping root, a creeping root producing a thick dove-feather, here pushing out a bundle of leaves and stems, covered with brownish elongated-lanceolate shiny scales; such are those that crowd the neck. The leaves are flat linear, beyond the broad line, tapering into a long triangular tip, erect, firm, with scabrous keel and margins, evergreen, more than triple wider than the stem, thus shorter, stems rarely a foot high, erect, striated, or inclined at the apex, covered at the base with few leaves, otherwise naked, sharply triangular, now very glabrous and smooth, already above medium scabrous. The bracts are embracing, with black ears on either side, below, often with a second leafy one, surpassing the spike, the remaining broadly oval and blunt, terminated with a bristle or point, the male spike once, the females a little larger and poll. 1 line long and 1 wide: the valves are oblong, more or less pointed, brown-black, with a white dorsal nerve. Female spikes 2-3, rarely more or fewer, flowering linear, fruiting oblong, blunt, now close together, now slightly separated, with a firmly protruding peduncle, with an angled foot, at the base wrapped in black ochre, either somewhat sessile or actually sessile: the valves are oval blunt or acute oblong, lower ones often more or less acuminate, from dark purple, with a paler or green dorsal nerve, sometimes very finely white-margined. Perigynia are more elongated and wider than the valves, loosely six-fold imbricated, the lower often more remote, with a flat face, slightly convex and smooth back, brightly green, or toward the tip brown or dark purple; the beak is very short and often curved golden mouth.
