Description Perennials. densely caespitose. Stems 50-100 cm tall, triquetrous, scabrous above, base cylindrical. Leaves longer than stem, 5-9 mm wide, scabrous along margins. Basal sheaths bladeless, yellowish brown, sheaths usually disintegrating into fibers. Involucral bracts involucral bracts leaflike, 5-25 cm long, sheathless. Spikes 3-6; terminal spikes male or gynaecandrous, linear terete, 50-70 mm long; lateral spikes female, with slender peduncles, pendent, terete, 30-80 mm long. Staminate scales pale green, 4-4.5 mm long, apex acute. Pistillate scales pale green, 2.5-3 mm long, apex acute or long awned. Perigynia longer than pistillate scales, ovoid, 2.5-3 mm long, finely 3-4-veined, brownish speckled, beak short, mouth notched. Achenes broadly ovoid, ca. 1.5 mm long. Stigmas 2.
