Translation The culm is leguminous, firm, with a sharp top, scabrous, with a base covered by sheaths of foxtails, bearing a spike 3-5 feet long. The leaves are 2-3 inches wide, with a serrated margin, the culm being longer; the sheath inside is white-membranous, long, cylindrical; the ligule is blade-like, rusty, and blunt. The bracts are everted, the upper ones are setaceous, which are wide, exceeding the leaves, with a divided auricle clasping, rusty. The male spike is solitary, 12-14 inches long, 2 inches wide, or with another smaller spike (3 lines long) at the base. The scales are wide, blunt, dark purple, with a green vein disappearing just below the apex; there are 6-8 female spikes, contiguous, 6-17 inches long, 2-3 lines wide, the lower ones being longer, simple, cylindrical, and with short peduncles: the upper ones are paired or ternate, unequal, and sessile: all are female or with a male apex. The scales are dark purple, ovate, or the lower ones are lanceolate, without a tip, with a pale vein. The style is included. The stigmas are 2, long. The peduncle is 2-8 bn. long. The perigynium (floral structure) is long, narrow, and wide, with a short and broadly beaked shape, densely and strongly veined, pale, with small bumps, slightly serrated on the upper edges, with a whole margin. The aculeum is nearly round and compressed. [details]
