Description Perennials. rhizomes long creeping. Stems 20-30 cm tall, upwardly slightly scabrous. Leaves shorter than or equaling stems, 1-2.5 mm wide. Basal sheaths pale brown, 3.5-7 mm long, fibrillose. Involucral bracts with sheath, bladeless. Inflorescences spikes 3-5, aggregated in a dense, sessile, androgynous, upper spikes staminate, lower spikes pistillate, ovate, 5-8 mm long. Staminate scales dark chestnut, 5-7 mm long, apex acute, sometimes awned. Pistillate scales dark chestnut, 3-4 mm long, apex acute, sometimes awned. Perigynia longer than pistillate scales, ovate, 3.5-4.5 mm long, 1.2-1.5 mm wide, many veined, glabrous, both sides narrowly alate, margins serrulate, apex tapering to long beak, mouth obliquely truncate. Achenes ovate, biconvex, 1.5-2 mm long. Stigmas 2.
