Basal sheaths pale brown, disintegration into fibers. Involucral bracts with sheaths, upper bracts shorter than spike, lower bracts longer than spike. Inflorescences terminal spikes male, ellipsoidal, thick, 3-6 cm long; 3-4 lateral spikes female, cylindrical, erect, 2-4 cm long, sometimes short staminate flower at terminal, densely flowered. Staminate scales pale brown, acute. Pistillate scales pale green, apex acute, ovate, shortly awned. Perigynia oblong-ovate, 3.5-4.5 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, boldly 7-10 veined, glabrous, apex abruptly narrowed into a beaked, mouth truncate. Achenes tightly enveloped by perigynium, biconvex, 2-2.5 mm long, 1.8-2 mm wide, apex small annulated. Pistils style base thickened; stigmas 2, rarely 3. [details]
