Description Loosely tufted. Rhizome extremely short. Stems erect to slightly curved, trigonous, 6-17 cm tall, 1-1.25 mm thick, smooth. Leaves occupying, sheathing, and clothing from the lower half to most of the stem, mostly more or less twice as long as the stem, 2-4 mm wide, flat or flattish. Spikes 4-6 or 7, all densely crowded at the apex of the stem or one infrequently 2.5-11 cm lower down the stem, terminal male or sometimes androgynaeceous, when male, cylindric, 1-1.5 cm long, 1.25-2.75 mm thick, lateral spikes suberect to very widely spreading, female or androgynaeceous, lower more often female, upper more often androgynaeceous, shortly cylindric to ovoid, 6-15 mm long, 6-8 mm thick, dense-flowered, upper lateral spikes sessile or subsessile, lower scarcely or shortly exserted-peduncled. Bracts of the two lower spikes foliaceous or subfoliaceous and, excluding the distant one when present, much exceeding the inflorescence, upper spikes very shortly or scarcely bracteate, lowest sheathing, others not or scarcely sheathing. Female glumes more or less oblong with a rounded apex, oblong-ovate, or ovate with a tapering apex, cymbiform to flattish, apex obtuse or, more often, very obtuse to rounded or truncate-rounded, 2-3 mm long, 1-2 mm wide, pale to yellowish or fulvous with an irregularly narrow to wide, thin and whitish-hyaline margin, midrib usually not but sometimes shortly excurrent. Utricles obovoid or sometimes ellipsoid-obovoid but tapering at each end, subinflated or obscurely trigonous, 3.5-4 mm long, 1.4-1.6 mm broad, membranaceous, rather strongly several-nerved dorsally and ventrally, narrowly marginate, glabrous, straight or straightish, patently spreading at maturity, becoming bright yellowish or greenish-yellow, not or scarcely stipitate; beak tapering below, terete or compressed-terete, 1-1.5 mm long, narrowly marginate, glabrous, subentire or shortly bidentulate, mouth straight. Achene pyriform or obovoid but tapering below, distinctly trigonous with the angles conspicuously thickened, especially at about halfway, about 1.5 mm long (excluding beak), 1-1.2 mm broad, brown, angles pale, scarcely to shortly and stoutly stipitate, abruptly beaked at the rounded or truncate-rounded apex; beak slender, pale, about 0.2 mm long. Style long and slender. Stigmas 3. [details]
