Description Perennials. densely caespitose. Stems 40-90 cm tall, triquetrous, scabrous above. Leaves longer than or equaling stem, 2.5-4 mm wide, dorsal surface grayish green, papillate, margins scabrous. Basal sheaths yellowish brown, splitting ventrally into reticulate fibers. Involucral bracts leaflike, shorter than inflorescence, 3-17 cm long, sheathless. Spikes 3-5; terminal spikes male, linear, 30-40 mm long, shortly pedunculate; lateral spikes female, lower spikes with short peduncles, others sessile, terete, 15-50 mm long. Staminate scales reddish brown, apex acute. Pistillate scales reddish brown, ca. 3 mm long, apex acute, costa forming a scabrous mucro. Perigynia longer than pistillate scales, obovoid, 3.8-4.1 mm long, 1.6-1.8 mm wide, hardly veined, purplish speckled, apex abruptly contracted into long beak, margins of beak serrulate, mouth deeply 2-lobed.
