Leaves basal; blade broadly linear, oblong or oblanceolate, 22 - 38.5 x 1.4- 3 cm, long acuminate, plicate, strigose above and villous underneath, base conduplicate and gradually narrowed into pseudopetiole 2.5 - 15.5 cm long; sheath 4 - 6.5 cm long, dark brown, the basal sheath becoming fibrous; ligule membranous. Lowest involucral bract reduced to sheath 3 cm long, brownish. Spikes sessile, elliptic or ovate, 3.8 - 5 mm long, androgynous, upper section male, lower female Inflorescence narrow, paniculate, 4.5 - 8.5 x 2.2 - 2.3 cm; nodes 1 - 3, lower ones distant, each subtending 1 - 2 partial inflorescences; partial inflorescences pedunculate, contracted, globose, 2 - 3.7 x 1 - 2.3 cm, with 3 - 4 short branches, hispid, each with a capitate cluster of spikes. Male glumes ovate, 2.8 - 3 x 0.9 - 1 mm, acute, awned, the awn 0.3 - 0.5 mm long, sides membranous, 10 - 16 nerved, dark brown, glabrous, keel 1-nerved Female glumes ovate elliptic to ovate, 2 - 2.5 x 1 - 1.6 mm, acute, awned, the awn 0.5 - 1 mm long, sides membranous, 15- 19 nerved, dark brown, glabrous, keel 1-nerved.
