Translation Tufted plant with rhizomes. Culms 75–130 cm tall, firm, erect, sharply triangular in cross-section, rough at the apex, with slightly concave faces; surrounded at the base by brown, disintegrating leaf sheaths. Leaves shorter than the culms, flat, somewhat rigid, up to 4 mm wide. Inflorescence 6–15 cm long, interrupted at the base, paniculate, nodding at the apex. Spikelets 10–17, male at the top and female at the base. Upper spikelets simple and close together, ovate; middle and lower ones more distant and compound, sometimes shortly pedunculate. Bracts setaceous (hair-like). Female glumes lanceolate-ovate, rusty brown with hyaline margins and a green dorsal nerve extending into a rough awn. Utricles exceeding the glumes, nearly erect, occasionally roughened at the top, 3½ mm long, ovate to oblong-ovate, pale, membranous, glabrous, multi-veined on both sides, spongy at the base, narrowing into a somewhat long beak. The beak is relatively wide at the front, deeply bifid, with the margins finely hairy and abruptly narrowed into slightly divergent teeth. The achene is ovate and fully enclosed within the utricle. There are two stigmas. [details]
