Description Loosely tufted. Rhizome extremely short. Stems erect or suberect, trigonous, 18-50 cm tall, about 1 mm thick below, smooth. Leaves basal and subbasal, shorter to longer than the stem, 1.5-3 mm wide, flat or flattish. Spikes 4-6, all densely crowded at the apex of the stem or sometimes one much lower down the stem, terminal usually male but sometimes androgynous or gynandrous; when male, cylindric, 1-1.5 cm long and about 2 mm thick, lateral spikes suberect to widely spreading, female ovoid or ovoid-cylindric to subglobose, 5-10 mm long, 4-6 mm thick, sometimes lowest compound with several smaller spikes branching from its base, upper spikes sessile or subsessile, lower scarcely or shortly exserted-peduncled. Bracts of the lower 1-2 spikes foliaceous or subfoliaceous and, excluding the distant one when present, at least one much exceeding the inflorescence, upper female spikes very shortly or scarcely bracteate, lowest shortly, others not sheathing. Female glumes more or less oblong with a rounded apex or, quite as often, oblong-obovate, less commonly ovate, apex always very obtuse or rotund, 1.5-2 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, wholly whitish with a light green midrib-stripe, sometimes castaneous above and towards the margins, midrib not or scarcely excurrent. Utricles ellipsoid but tapering at each end, especially above, obscurely trigonous, 2.75-3.25 mm long, 1-1.2 mm broad, membranaceous, rather strongly several-nerved dorsally and ventrally, narrowly marginate, glabrous, straight or straightish, patently spreading at maturity, light dull stramineous-brown, not or scarcely stipitate; beak tapering below, terete or compressed-terete, about 1 mm long, narrowly marginate, glabrous, light dull greenish, subentire or very shortly bidentulate, mouth straight. Achene ellipsoid or ellipsoid-obovoid, distinctly trigonous, angles slender, 1.25-1.75 mm long (excluding beak), about 1 mm broad, light bright brown including angles, becoming very dark brown, scarcely stipitate, abruptly slenderly and very shortly and pale-beaked. Style long and slender. Stigmas 3. [details]
