Description Caudex-forming perennial; caudex simple or branched, 4-8 mm thick; roots fibrous, pale brown.
Culms 2.5-5 cm X 0.4-0.6 mm, ascending to spreading or the lowermost often curving-reflexed,
very slender, flattened, 2 or 3 shallowly ribbed on each side, smooth on margins, light greenish brown, glabrous, sheathed by 2 glume-like bracts at base that are scabrous on keel, hidden by the fibrillose leaf bases. Leaves numerous, spreading, spirally arranged, basal, the lowermost often divaricate; sheaths short, herbaceous proximally, submembranous distally, coarsely ribbed, pale green, glabrous, the orifice with membranous band, slightly concave to truncate
on distal sheaths or convex on proximal ones, ligule absent; blades linear, 2-5 cm X 1.1-1.9 mm, straight to slightly curvate, plicate, stiffly herbaceous, antrorsely coarsely scabrous, often with scabrae on the plicate angles distally, green to pale green, glabrous otherwise, the apex acuminate, canaliculatedistally, the plicate angles converging to a callus-like tip. Inflorescence terminal, a single, subcapitate, obdeltoid fascicle of spikelets, 4-6 mm in diam., glabrous; involucral bracts two or three, 5-14 X 0.5-0.8 mm, leaflike, the lowermost 1(2) shortly exceeding the inflorescence; spikelets unisexual, the lowermost 1(2) spikelets in inflorescence fascicle
staminate, (4 to)5 to 10(to 12), narrowly ellipsoid, 3-4.5 X 0.8-1.2 mm, acute to acuminate at base, acuminate at apex, the pistillate spikelets 1 -flowered, staminate 1- to 2-flowered; pistillate spikelet scales spirally arranged, 2-3 X 1-1.2 mm, spreading, thinly herbaceous, smooth, stramineous to pale brown, glabrous, midcosta a single nerve or often with 2 subtending fine nerves, lateral nerves indistinct, the margins escarious; fertile scales terminal, 1 in
pistillate spikelets, 1 or 2 in staminate spikelets, obtuse to broadly so in cross section, mucronate; sterile scales like the fertile, 3 or 4 proximal, often awned; stamens 3, the anthers 1.8-2.2 mm long, truncate at base, long-apiculate, the apiculus 0.5 mm, papillate; style 3 branched, the stigmas elongating and often curling, equaling to exceeding lengt ikelets. Fructification obtusely trigonous, 3-costate, 1.2-1.6 X 0.9-1 mm, obovate, obtuse at base, truncate at apex, finely and faintly longitudinally striate, pale brown to brown; style base conical, 0.6-0.8 mm X 0.6-0.8 mm at base, spongy thickened, often longitudinally ribbed proximally, pale brown; perianth scales 3, obovate to subrounded, 0.1-0.2 mm long, crystalline-ciliate.
