Description Herb, probably dioecious. Plants with male inflorescences: Caudex 4–8 (10) mm diam. including sheath remains and adventitious roots. Leaf: sheath pubescent, the same color as leaf blades; contraligule indistinct; blade (7–) 10–20 × 0.09–0.2 cm, linear-lanceolate, margins and midrib (abaxial) sparsely ciliate, concolorous, reddish-brown to dark brown. Inflorescence head-like or condensed paniculate, comprising 1–2 paracladia and about 40 spikelets; culm 3–11 × ~0.1 cm, compressed, margins glabrous, pubescent or pilose. Paracladia up to 1.5 cm long, with 1–2 orders of branching; peduncle ~0.8 mm long, compressed, glabrous to sparsely scabrous. Involucral bract (outermost) leaf-like: sheaths up to 3 mm long, usually pubescent, but may range from glabrous to pilose; blade 1–2 × ~0.2 cm, margin and abaxial surface glabrous to pilose. Staminate spikelet 6.5–7 × ~1 mm, lanceolate, comprising 5 glumes and 1 flower; glume (outermost) 4–4.5 mm long, glabrous orciliolate, mucronate, the mucro 0.1–1.5 mm long, glabrous or sparsely ciliolate; stamens 2, connective projection short-ciliate. Plants with female inflorescences: Caudex ~3.8–5 mm diam. including sheath remains and adventitious roots. Leaf: sheath pubescent, reddish-brown; contraligule indistinct; blade 7–10 × 0.1–0.12 cm, linear-lanceolate, margins and midrib on abaxial side sparsely ciliate, concolorous, reddish-brown. Inflorescence paniculate with 1–3 paracladia and about 15 spikelets; culm 6 × ~0.1 cm, compressed, glabrous. Paracladium (basal) 1–2 cm long, with 1–2 (3) orders of branching; peduncle 1 × ~0.05 cm, compressed, margin glabrous. Involucral bract (basal) leaf-like: sheath up to 0.5 cm long, red-dish-brown, the mouth pubescent; blade ~1×~0.15 cm, midrib 1, reddish-brown, the margin sparsely ciliate. Pistillate spikelet ~6 × ~0.8 mm, lanceolate, solitary, with 6 glumes; glume (outermost) 3.2–4.5 mm long, margin glabrous or ciliate, mucronate (mucro 0.8–1.7 mm long, glabrous or sparsely ciliate); stigmas 3. Achene ~3.5 × ~0.9 mm, obovoid, smooth, light yellow to reddish-brown, with a constriction zone between main body and beak, the middle and apex sparsely ciliate; hypogynous scale up to 0.85 mm long, elliptic to obovate, ciliate, the trichomes ~0.7 mm long (translucent); beak ~1.3 mm, conical with rounded apex, pubescent. [details]
