Description Tall perennial with horizontal stolons; stems 30–450 cm long and 5–12 mm thick below, terete to triangular, pith-filled. Leaf-blades short or up to 70 cm long; sheaths to 70 cm long and 3.5 cm wide. Inflorescence a lax anthela with spikelets or groups of spikelets on branches of very unequal length, nearly all spikelets stalked; major involucral bract 4–6 cm long, erect and stiff, leafy to stem-like. Spikelets 6–15 x 2–5 mm, ovoid to oblong, pale to medium brown. Glumes 3–4 mm long, very broad and rounded at apex, strongly concave, pale with darker brown lines or patches; margin with a prominent pallid border and often numerous hairs, especially near the apex; midrib distinct, extended into a short hairy or scabrid whitish apex. Perianth-segments 4–6, plumose, shorter or longer than the nutlet. Style usually with 2 stigmas. Nutlet 1.5–2(–3) mm long, obovate, biconvex, almost smooth, dark brown when mature. [details]
