Nomenclature Simpson and Koyama (1998) apparently intended to cite the name Carex lenticularis D. Don. Since the epithets 'lenticularis' and 'biconvexis' have similar meanings, it seems that the latter was created to replace Carex lenticularis D. Don, a later homonym of C. lenticularis Michx. As a speculation, it is possible that the epithet was written by either David Don or someone else in a copy of the original article or on a herbarium voucher, remaining as a manuscript name. When Simpson and Koyama intended to cite Michaux's Carex lenticularis, the epithet was seemingly inadvertently changed as well (Kanchi N. Gandhi, Harvard University Herbaria, pers. comm.). [details]

The name Carex biconvexis appears to be a mistake, and the authors were likely intending to cite Carex lenticularis. The reference provided by Koyama and Simpson for the name Carex biconvexis D.Don corresponds to a page (Don, Trans. Linn. Soc. 14: 331. 1824) where Carex lenticularis D.Don is mentioned. Additionally, there is no Carex biconvexis Michx. in any of Michaux’s works, but in his 1803 publication, Carex lenticularis is cited again (Michaux, Fl. Bor.-Amer. 2:172. 1803).
Since lenticularis and biconvexis have similar meanings, it seems that the epithet biconvexis was inadvertently used in place of lenticularis.
