Description Perennial rhizomatous herb with short rhizome. Culms caespitose, 3-angled, 3–30 cm long, 0.3–1.0 mm wide. Leaves basal; blade flat, linear, shorter to longer than culm, 1.2–3.6 mm wide; sheath purplish. Lower bracts leaf-like, longer than inflorescence, 1–3 mm wide, sheathed, upper ones becoming shorter and sheathless. Inflorescence a simple panicle, 3–18 cm long. Spikes bisexual, androgynous, 4–12 mm long; staminate section shorter than pistillate section; pistillate section laxly 3–8-flowered. Lateral spikes arising from a sterile utriculiform cladoprophyll. Staminate scales ovate, 2.1–2.8 × 0.8–1.2 mm, brown to reddish-brown; margin very narrowly hyaline, mucronate. Pistillate scales ovate, 1.5–2.2 × 0.8–1.5 mm, brown to reddish-brown; margin very narrowly hyaline; apex acute; 3-veined with lateral veins obscure and mid-vein extending into a scabrous awn; uppermost scales usually long-mucronate. Perigynia ellipsoid-obovoid, trigonous, 1.8–2.8 × 0.9–1.2 mm, pale green, sub-leathery, glabrous, laterally 2-keeled, distinctly veined; base sub-spongy to spongy; apex abruptly contracted into a 0.5–0.9 mm long, very laxly scabrous beak; orifice truncate. Stigmas 3. Nutlets broadly obovoid, trigonous, 1.4–1.8 × 0.8–1.1 mm; apex depressed; beak and stipe recurved. Sterile rachilla usually present, minute. [details]
