Description Culms 25–100 cm × 1–3 mm, scabrous. Basal sheaths pale cinnamon to reddish-brown. Leaves, 25–165 cm × 3.0–9.3(12.4) mm largest ones, longer than the culms, oldest ones orangey-brownish at the base, revolute, papillose below, scabrous at the margin. Inflorescence a panicle, (4)10–35 cm long, with 10–55 androgynous spikes, dropping. Proximal-most bract 12.5–31.3(70.2) cm × 3–8 mm, usually much longer than the inflorescence. Spikes 3.1–15.5 cm × 3.0–7.5 mm, linear, flexuous, densely flowered, the distal 1/10–1/4 staminate, unbranched, with about 40(80)–200 female flowers, peduncles smooth or scabrous, flattened, flexuous, shorter than the spikes. Pistillate glumes 2.2–4.2(4.5) × 0.5–1.4 mm, narrowly ovate to lan-ceolate or elliptic, long acute or with an awn up to 1.5 mm, reddish-brown to dark purple with a light-green or stramineous middle longitudinal strip, hyaline mar-gins absent or present all along the glume. Stigmas 3. Utricles 2.6–3.3(4.1) × 0.6–1.3 mm, narrowly elliptic, compressed, sometimes slightly excurved, smooth to scabrous on its upper third, light green, stramineous, brown or dark purple to al-most black, at least some nerves clearly visible, gradually constricted at the apex into a 0.3–1.2 mm long, straight or slightly curved beak, smooth, bifid, teeth 0.1–0.5 mm. Nutlets 1.6–2.6 × 0.6–1.0 mm, stramineous or brown, obovate to elliptic, sometimes with a lateral invagination in the middle. [details]
