Description Rhizomes far-creeping, often ascending; shoots solitary, arising from elongated, decumbent base of flowering stem; roots red-brown; scales pale yellow-brown, chaffy, soon decaying. Stems 15–40 cm, stout, ± terete, striate, with few short leaves at base. Leaves up to 30 cm × 1–2 mm, stiff, erect, flat or ± involute, gradually narrowed to a ± trigonous fine point, mid green; hypostomous; sheaths forming short false stem, with inner face hyaline-brown and apex concave; lower sheaths pale brown-hyaline, often darkening; ligule 1–2 mm, rounded. Inflorescence a compact ± ovoid head, 7–15 mm; bracts glumaceous. Spikes 2–4, 4–8 mm, male at top, female at base, lower often entirely female. Male glumes c. 3.5 mm, oblanceolate-elliptic, pale red-brown; apex acute. Female glumes 3–4 mm, broadly ovate-elliptic, pale red-brown, hyaline towards margin; apex ± acute. Utricles (3–)3.5–4.5 mm, ovoid-ellipsoid, ± compressed, faintly ribbed, shiny, yellow-brown or often dark brown; beak c. 0.5 mm, bifid; stigmas 2; nut obovoid-oblong, stalked, with truncate apex. [details]
