Fruit inconnu. Translation This species, of which we have seen only one mature specimen, can only be compared with C. leptostachya L. f., which it resembles in habit, but from which it differs in many important characteristics, especially in the shape of the male and female bracts and in the very rough stem at its angles. The stem, growing from a horizontal rhizome, rises to nearly 1.5 feet and is covered on the lower part with numerous striated, reddish sheaths and bears about 5 leaves with loose sheaths
that are bearded with numerous short, whitish hairs at their truncated openings. The leaves are about 20 cm long and 5 mm wide; they are rough at the edges and have 19 veins. The bracts are all leaf-like and extend beyond the male spike, the lower one having a sheath 15 mm long, while the others are not sheathing at their base. The female spikes are about twice their own length, and the upper one is separated from the male spike; the peduncle of the lower spike is twice the length of its sheath, while the upper female spikes are sessile and all are more or less distinctly erect. The male spike is 3.5 cm long. The female bracts are equal in length to the young fruits and measure 4 mm; they are spread apart as in Carex strigosa and much more elongated than in that species. The male bracts measure 6 mm and are attenuated towards their lower part, whitish and scarious above, and reddish below the apex, which is rounded, scarious, and ciliate. Fruit unknown. [details]
