Description hizome short, woody, sometimes with stolons. Culms tufted, 30–45 cm tall, trigonous, scabrous, base with dark brown or brown fibrous leaf sheath remnants. Leaves shorter or nearly as long as culm; blades 1.5–3 mm wide, nearly leathery, flat, upper margins scabrous. Bracts short leaf-like or bristle-like, shorter than spikes, with sheaths 5–12 mm long. Spikes 4 or 5, widely spaced; terminal spike male, cylindrical, 3–6 cm long, 2–3 mm wide, pedunculate; lateral spikes female, narrow cylindrical, 2.5–3 cm long, 2–3 mm wide, flowers sparsely arranged, spike peduncles hidden in bract sheaths or slightly exserted in the lowermost. Male glumes lanceolate, 5–5.5 mm long, pale yellow or pale brown, apex acute, back with 3 brown midveins. Female glumes obovate, 2–2.5 mm long, pale green or pale brown, apex gradually tapering, back with 3 brown midveins extending into a short point. Utricles fusiform-ovoid, obtusely trigonous, 3–3.5 mm long, longer than female glumes, yellow-green, membranous, with many fine nerves, sparsely shortly hairy or nearly glabrous, base narrowing into short stipe, apex tapering into beak 0.5–0.7 mm long, with 2 small teeth. Nutlet tightly enclosed, rhombic-ellipsoid, trigonous, 1.8–2 mm long, chestnut-brown, apex abruptly contracted into annulate disc, angles constricted in mid-section, upper and lower faces concave, base with short stipe; style base thickened; stigmas 3.
