Description Spikes 4-5 distant cylindric, terminal 2-3 male purple, lower fem[ale] erect peduncled dense, fem[ale] glumes elliptic aristate, style 3-fid, utricle ovoid inflated thin lurid glabrous suddenly narrowed into a deeply bifid beak with 2 spreading prominent linear teeth. Male glumes purple-red with green keel, triangular tipped. Fem[ale] glumes purple-red on sides, the 3-nerved yellow back excurrent in a rigid scabrous arista, about aslong as utricle. Utricles in size and shape about equalling those of small examples of C. rostrata, but different in colour; beak 2-fid very deeply into linear teethfinally stellately divaricate, conspicuous. Boott observes that he has never seensuch fem[ale] glumes as these in C. rostrata. [details]

Folia culmo breviora longiorave 3–5 mm lata basi plicata superne plana. Spiculae 4–5, superiores 2–3 cylindricae, inferiores 2–3 oblongo-cylindricae 2–5 cm longae crassae remotae. Bracteae foliaceae inflorescentiam superantes, ima subvaginans. Squamae ♀ majusculae lanceolatae fuscae e carina viridi mucronatae vel aristatae. Utriculi squamis paullo longiores demum divaricati membranacei ovati inflati fusco-straminei nitidi glabri paucinervosi, in rostrum longum profunde bidentatum abruptius desinentes, crura angusta divergentia.
