Description Rhizome woody, obliquely ascending. Culms tufted, median (i.e. arising from the middle of the rhizome), 20–65 cm tall, bluntly trigonous, slightly smooth, at the base with dark-brown or brown persistent leaf sheaths, split into fibrous strips. Leaves shorter than the culms, or sometimes longer than the culms; leaf blades 2–5 mm wide, herbaceous, flat-spreading, margins rough. Bracts short leaf-like; the lower ones nearly as long as the spikes, the upper ones shorter than the spikes, with sheaths, sheaths 0.6–2.5 cm long. Spikes 3–5, distant from each other; terminal spike male, club-shaped cylindrical, 1.2–4 cm long, 3–5 mm wide, peduncle at the base of spike 2.5–5.5 cm long; lateral spikes female, cylindrical, 1–3.5 cm long, 3–6 mm wide, flowers densely arranged, peduncles of spikes usually enclosed within the bract sheaths. Male glumes oblanceolate or linear-oblanceolate, 5–5.5 mm long (including awn), yellowish-white, apex truncate or rounded-obtuse, with 1 or 3 green mid-nerves on the back, extending into an awn 1–1.5 mm long. Female glumes obovate-long-elliptic or obovate, 4–5 mm long (including awn), greenish-white or pale yellowish-white, apex truncate or slightly emarginate, with 3 green mid-nerves on the back, extending into a rough long awn 2.5–3 mm long. Utricles obovoid-globose or obovoid-ellipsoid-globose, bluntly trigonous, 3–3.5 mm long, slightly shorter than the female glumes, yellow-green, membranous, with many fine veins, sparsely covered with short soft hairs, base contracted into a short stalk about 0.5 mm long, apex nearly without a beak, mouth nearly entire or slightly emarginate. Nutlets tightly enclosed in the utricles, obovoid-globose, trigonous, 2–2.4 mm long, chestnut-brown, apex abruptly constricted into an annular disc, base with a short stalk; base of style slightly thickened; stigmas 3. [details]

Description Rhizome obliquely ascending. Culms tufted, 20-65 cm tall, slender, obtusely trigonous. Basal sheaths dark brown, split into fibers. Leaves longer than culm, blades 2-5 mm wide, flat, margins scabrid. Involucral bracts shortly leafy, shorter than subtending spike, long sheathed, lowest sheath 1.5-3 mm. Spikes 3-5, spaced; terminal spike male, clavate-cylindric, 12-40 × 3-5 mm, with peduncle 2.5-5.5 cm; lateral spikes female, cylindric, 12-40 × 3-6 mm, densely flowered; peduncle erect, lowest one exserted, upper ones enclosed in involucral bract sheath. Female glumes pale yellowish white, oblong, 2.5-3 mm, green costa 3-veined, excurrent into a scabrid awn 2.5-3 mm, apex truncate or emarginate. Utricles green, obovate-elliptic or elliptic, trigonous, ca. 3 mm, membranous, puberulent, many veined, base abruptly contracted into a very short stipe ca. 0.5 mm, apex abruptly contracted and nearly beakless, orifice truncate. Nutlet tightly enveloped, obovate, trigonous, ca. 2 mm, with faces excavated in lower part, apex abruptly contracted into an annulus; style base slightly thickened; stigmas 3. [details]
