2n = 44. [details]

Description Rhizomes shortly creeping, with few shoots that are loosely tufted or forming substantial tussocks in good conditions; roots pale purple-brown and scales purple-brown, vermilion-flushed, glossy and persistent. Stems 30–100 cm, stout and trigonous-subterete. Leaves 20–60 cm × 2–4 mm, thin, flat, tapering from a broad base to a fine point, dull green and covered above with numerous stout, apically directed aculeolae, glossy and pale green below with conspicuously dark green veins, ageing to pale straw colour; hypostomous; sheaths purplish- or red-brown, shiny and persistent, the inner face hyaline and flecked with red, later turning brown, with a straight or concave apex; ligule 2–3 mm, obtuse, the margin of free tissue ciliolate. Inflorescence one-quarter the length of the stem, with leaf-like bracts longer than the spikes, the upper sometimes exceeding the inflorescence. Male spike 1, 18–30 mm, with male glumes 5–6.5 mm, elliptic, pale or red-brown with a paler or green midrib and hyaline margins, the lowest glumes up to 10 mm and bract-like, the apex ± acute. Female spikes 2–4, distant, 2–6-flowered, 10–20 mm, erect, with rough peduncles half-ensheathed; female glumes 4.5–6 mm, broadly lanceolate to obovate, brown with a green midrib and broad hyaline margins, apex acute or mucronate. Utricles 7–9 mm, rhomboid-obovoid, narrowed into a solid base, distinctly ribbed, shiny, brownish-green, with a 3 mm beak, smooth or scabrid, obliquely truncate and split in front; stigmas 3; nut obovoid and trigonous. [details]
