2n = 54*, 58, 60*.

Description Rhizomes shortly creeping; shoots clustered, forming a loose tussock or appearing at ± regular intervals; roots grey- or orange-brown; scales black or dark grey-brown, persistent. Stems 25–60 cm, slender, ± sharply trigonous, rough on angles. Leaves 20–40 cm × 1–2 mm, rough at least above, ± flat or slightly keeled, gradually tapered to a fine ± trigonous point, grey-green, often overwintering; hypostomous; lower sheaths grey-brown or dark brown, persistent, with inner face hyaline, often with glandular dots; apex ± straight to concave; ligule 1–2 mm, obtuse, tubular with a free margin of 1–2 mm. Inflorescence a ± compact head, 1–5 cm; bracts glumaceous, lowest rarely setaceous. Spikes 6–10, 5–8 mm, sessile, male at top, female below. Male glumes 3–4 mm, lanceolate-elliptic, pale brown-hyaline; apex acute. Female glumes c. 3 mm, broadly ovate, purple-brown, with a short green midrib and broad hyaline margin; apex acute or mucronate. Utricles 3–4 mm, broadly ovoid or suborbicular, plano-convex, distinctly 2–5-ribbed in lower half, dark brown, shiny; beak 1.5–2 mm, broad, serrulate, bifid, split for whole length on abaxial side; stigmas 2; nut top-shaped, plano-convex, stalked. [details]

Description Culms (1–)2–90 cm. Leaves: sheaths adaxially whitish, conspicuously red dotted, truncate or convex at mouth, prolonged 0.4–4(–6) mm beyond base of blade; ligules 8–57 mm; foliage leaf blades 14–30(–47) cm × 1–2.5 mm. Inflorescences bisexual, straight, little interrupted, ± compound (short branch at least on most proximal node or, occasionally, unbranched) , 2–5(–6) × 0.6–1.4(–1.7) cm, proximal 0–3 branches slightly overlapping 1 above; basal branch (when present) with 2–12 spikes; proximal internode 3–7(–10) mm. Pistillate scales straw colored or brownish, 1.5–2.7 × 0.9–1.6 mm, as wide as perigynia at base, narrower distally. Perigynia ± spreading, olive to dark chestnut brown, stongly 4–6-veined and finely 2–4-veined abaxially, with narrow median strip extending full length (grooved aspect emphasized by pair of bordering veins), often membranous flap toward apex, narrowly deltoid-ovoid, unequally biconvex, (2–)2.3–2.5(–2.9) × 1–1.4 mm, shiny; beak 0.9–1.1 mm. Achenes broadly compressed-ovoid, 1.4–1.7 × 0.7–1 mm. 2n = 48, 50, 54, 60. [details]

Translation Loosely tufted, although in rare cases it may form a somewhat dense turf. Stems 20–60(100) cm, trigonous, with sharp angles, scabrid towards the apex. Leaves 1–2(2.5) mm wide, shorter than the stems, flat or channelled, very rough, rather rigid; ligule up to 1.5 mm, obtuse or truncate; antiligule very short or absent; basal sheaths entire, scale-like, brown. Lowest bract shorter than the inflorescence, setaceous, not sheathing. Spikes small, numerous, in inflorescences 2–3(5) cm long, occasionally branched in the lower part, ± ovoid. Glumes oval, acute or mucronate, reddish-brown, with a broad scarious margin, the female glumes generally shorter than the utricles. Utricles 2.8–3 × 1.2–1.3 mm, pyriform, plano-convex, with venation scarcely visible, very dark brown, attenuated into a 1–1.2 mm beak, somewhat winged, serrulate, bifid, with an abaxial cleft. Achenes 1.3 × 0.8 mm, oval in outline, biconvex or plano-convex, with the style base persistent as a short column. 2n = 54*, 58, 60*. [details]
