Description
Plants dioecious. Rhizomes shortly creeping; shoots loosely tufted, often decumbent; roots often as thick as rhizome, pale purple-brown; scales pale purple- or orange-brown, soon decaying. Stems 5–30 cm, erect, terete, striate. Leaves 5–20 cm × 0.3–1 mm, rigid, ± erect, channelled or semicircular in transverse section, with 3 main veins and rounded apex, dark green, dying to a dull red-brown; hypostomous; sheaths becoming pale orange-brown, persistent, with inner face hyaline; apex straight but soon split; ligule c. 0.5 mm, rounded, tubular. Inflorescence a single terminal, usually unisexual, spike; bracts glumaceous or 0. Male spike 8–20 mm; male glumes 3–4 mm, ovate-oblong, red-brown with hyaline margin; apex obtuse or acute. Female spike 5–20 mm, subglobose to cylindric; female glumes 2.5–3.5 mm, red- to purple-brown, with pale midrib, dark nerve and ± hyaline margin, persistent; apex obtuse or acute; glume of lowest floret often enlarged, with acuminate apex. Utricles 2.5–3.5 mm, patent, rarely deflexed when ripe, broadly ovoid, compressed, pale red-purple-brown with darker ribs; beak 0.5–0.75 mm, serrulate, notched; stigmas 2; nut subglobose, compressed. [details]
