2n = 58, 60, 62. [details]

Translation Rhizome with very long internodes, covered by scales, entire or somewhat fibrous. Stems (8)15–50(70) cm, trigonous with acute or obtuse angles, smooth or slightly scabrid in the upper part. Leaves (0.4)1–3(5.3) mm wide, shorter than the stems, flat or channelled, rough along the margins for a variable length, somewhat rigid; ligule 0.5–1 mm, with raised margins, apex obtuse or rounded; no antiligule; basal sheaths scale-like, brown, entire or weakly fibrous. Lowest bract shorter than to much longer than the inflorescence, glumaceous with a setaceous apex or foliar. Spikes grouped into a single spike, generally lobed, (0.5)1–2(3.5) cm, sometimes the lowest slightly separated from the rest, androgynous, and occasionally the lowermost one(s) female. Glumes oval, aristate or mucronate, very rarely acute, dark brown, without a scarious margin or with it narrow in the upper part, the female ones larger or slightly smaller than the utricles. Utricles (3.2)3.5–4(4.2) × (1.2)1.7–2(2.2) mm, broadly oval in outline, plano-convex, spongy at the base, with very prominent nerves, greenish or brownish, abruptly narrowed into a beak (0.5)0.7–1.1 mm long, scabrid, bifid or obliquely truncate. Achenes 1.5–2(2.1) × 1–1.7 mm, obovoid or elliptic in outline, plano-convex, with the style base persistent as a short column. 2n = 58, 60, 62. [details]
