Description Roots densely covered with short yellowish to stramineous hairs. Culms 30–80 cm × 1–3 mm. Basal sheaths reddish-brown to dark purple. Leaves (25)55–165 cm × 5.0–9.5 mm largest ones, much longer than the culms, oldest ones orangey-brownish at the base. Inflorescence lax panicle, 12.0–30.2 cm long, with (10)20–65 androgynous spikes, erect, spreading or dropping. Proximal-most bract 22.5–39.6 cm × 3–6 mm, subequal or longer than the inflorescence. Spikes 4.3–11.4 cm × 4.0–7.1 mm, linear, densely flowered, the distal 1/5 staminate, unbranched to 1–2-branched, with about 40–100 female flowers, peduncles smooth or scabrous and papillose, much shorter than the spikes. Pistillate glumes (2.6)2.9–4.3 × 0.6–1.7 mm, lanceolate, acute, purplish-black with a light-yellow middle longitudinal strip, awn (0.2)0.5–1.6 mm, hyaline margins absent. Stigmas 3. Utricles 2.0–3.3 × 0.6–1.5 mm, C-shaped, smooth, green-brownish to dark purple, somewhat shiny, lateral and side nerves conspicuous, constricted at the apex into a 0.8–1.4 mm long curved beak, smooth, bidentate to bifid, teeth up to 0.6 mm long. Nutlets 1.6–2.4 × 0.8–1.2 mm, oblong to elliptic to suborbicular, with one lateral invagination at the middle or completely irregular. [details]
