Description Rhizomes very short, erect, forming dense tussocks up to 40 cm high; roots < 2 mm thick, purple-brown; scales light brown, shiny, persistent. Stems 25–100 cm, rough, sharply trigonous. Leaves 40–100 cm × 3–8 mm, rough, thin, plicate, gradually tapering, blue-green to glaucous on both sides, with margins rolling outwards on drying; hypostomous; sheaths becoming yellow-brown, persistent, with inner face hyaline, fibrillose, and minutely red-flecked; apex concave; ligule 5–13 mm, acute, with free tissue < 1 mm, ± tubular. Inflorescence 1/7 length of stem; bracts leaf-like to setaceous, lowest less than half length of inflorescence. Male spikes 1–3, 15–50 mm, lowermost occasionally female at base; male glumes c. 5 mm, oblanceolate, hyaline at margins; apex obtuse. Female spikes 2–3, 15–40 mm, usually contiguous, cylindric, erect, ± sessile, often male at top; female glumes 3–4 mm, ovate-elliptic, hyaline at margins; apex obtuse or subacute. Utricles 3–4 mm, broadly ovoid-ellipsoid, ribbed, green; beak 0.2 mm, truncate; nut obovoid, biconvex, stalked. [details]

Description Rizoma de entrenudos largos, a veces laxamente cespitosa. 2n = 56, 58. Translation Rhizome with long internodes, sometimes loosely cespitose. Stems (9)25–70 cm, trigonous, smooth or somewhat scabrid toward the apex. Leaves (2)3–5.6(9) mm wide, shorter than the stems, rough on the margins and sometimes on the upper surface, flat, somewhat rigid; ligule up to 1.5 mm long, with rounded or obtuse apex; without an antiligule; basal sheaths scale-like, ± entire, light brown, sometimes with black spots. Lower bract leafy, shorter than the inflorescence, sheathing. Male spike linear, (13)15–25(33) mm long, fusiform, oval in outline; female spikes 3–4, (6)12–30 mm long, cylindrical, ± lax-flowered, separated or slightly overlapping at the base, sometimes the lowest branched; occasionally the lowest subbasal, long-pedunculate, the lower ones pendulous, very rarely all erect. Male glumes ± oval, acute, subacute, obtuse or mucronate, black or dark brown, lacking a scarious margin; female glumes ovate, acute or mucronate, black, without a scarious margin, shorter than the utricles. Utricles 4–6.1 × 0.8–2.2 mm, suberect, oval in outline, compressed, with nerves weakly marked or imperceptible, with very thin walls, glabrous, smooth, sometimes bearing a few small prickles along the upper margins of the body, generally black, rarely greenish, although at maturity at least some are almost completely black, gradually attenuate or sometimes abruptly narrowed into a straight beak 0.9–1.8 mm long, bidentate at the apex, shortly bifid or irregularly broken, scabrid. Achenes 1.4–2 × 0.6–0.9 mm, elliptic or obovoid in outline, trigonous, loosely enclosed within the utricle, with the ventral internodal area occupying 1/2–1/3 of the achene length, greenish or brown. 2n = 56, 58.
