Description Rhizomes short; shoots densely tufted, forming substantial tussocks in older populations; roots pale brown; scales grey-brown, usually persistent. Stems 30–80 cm, rough with upward-pointing teeth, trigonous. Leaves 25–90 cm × 2–5 mm, rough beneath, thin, ± flat or slightly keeled, tapering gradually to a very fine, flat tip, mid green, often red-brown and persistent on dying; hypostomous; sheaths forming short false stems, lower pale brown or pink-brown, shiny, persistent, with the inner face hyaline; apex concave; ligule 4–8 mm, acute, with little or no free margin. Inflorescence 3–7 cm, lax; lower bracts setaceous, upper glumaceous. Spikes 5–18, ± contiguous or lowest distant, 5–15 mm, ± erect, becoming divaricate on ripening, sessile, upper female at top, male at base, lower entirely female. Male glumes 2.5–3 mm, ovate-oblong, pale red-brown, with green midrib and broadly hyaline margin; apex rounded or obtuse, ± mucronate. Female glumes c. 2 mm, ovate-elliptic, red-brown, with green midrib; apex acute or obtuse. Utricles 3–4 mm, lanceoloid-ellipsoid, plano-convex, often curved, distinctly ribbed, green, with the ribs becoming dark red-brown; beak 0.5–0.75 mm, often minutely serrulate, truncate or indistinctly notched; stigmas 2; nut compressed cylindric, stalked. [details]
