Description Rhizomes short, woody, sometimes with stolons. Culms tufted or loosely tufted, central, 25–50 cm tall, obtusely trigonous, slightly slender, smooth, with gray-brown or dark-brown persistent leaf sheaths at the base, splitting into fibers. Leaves longer than or sometimes nearly as long as the culms; leaf blades 2–4 mm wide, thinly leathery, spreading, margins scabrous. Bracts bristle-like, shorter than the spikes, with a short sheath or almost no sheath, sheaths 1.5–4 mm long. Spikes 2 or 3, borne near the top of the culm and somewhat close; terminal spike male, clavate-cylindric, 0.8–1.5 cm long, ca. 3 mm wide, with a short peduncle at the base; lateral spikes female, short-cylindric or nearly ovoid, 0.5–1.5 cm long, 3–4 mm wide, flowers densely arranged, basal ones nearly sessile or with peduncles enclosed in the bract sheaths. Male glumes oblanceolate or long-elliptic-oblanceolate, 4–5 mm long, pale brown, apex obtuse or acute, with one brown midvein on the back. Female glumes ovate, 2.5–3 mm long, yellowish-brown, apex acute with a short point, with 3 pale yellowish-brown midveins on the back. Utricles obovoid, obtusely trigonous, 3–3.2 mm long, nearly as long as or slightly longer than the female glumes, pale yellowish-brown, membranous, with several fine veins, sparsely short-hispid or nearly glabrous, base gradually narrowed into a short stipe, apex gradually narrowed into a beak 0.5–0.8 mm long, beak orifice with 2 small teeth. Nutlets tightly enclosed in the utricles, obovoid, trigonous, 1.5–1.8 mm long, chestnut-brown, lower faces along the angles concave, apex abruptly narrowed into a short beak, annular disc indistinct, base with a short stipe; base of style slightly thickened; stigmas 3. [details]
