Description Rhizomes far-creeping with tufted shoots, brown roots and grey-brown fibrous scales; stems 15–40 cm, trigonous-subterete and striate; leaves up to 60 cm and 3–6 mm wide, keeled, parallel-sided for much of their length and rather abruptly tapered to a flat point, yellow- to bronze-green, basal leaves decumbent and those on the flowering stem subulate, present only at the very base and 1–3 cm long, hypostomous, with pale brown to dirty-white loose sheaths and a ligule about 2 mm, obtuse to subacute. The inflorescence reaches three-quarters of the stem length, with lower bracts loosely sheathing (funnel-shaped) and shorter than the spike. The male spike is single, 1–1.5 cm, ± clavate, with male glumes more than 4.5 mm, orange-brown with a paler midrib. Female spikes 1–2(–3), 1–2 cm, ± distant, erect, few- and lax-flowered, with female glumes 3 mm, broadly ovate, red-brown with a paler midrib and an acute or mucronate apex. Utricles 3.8–5 mm, broadly obovoid, hardly inflated and ribbed, with a beak obliquely truncate, about 1 mm; stigmas 3; nut ovoid-trigonous. [details]

Description Rhizome slender stoloniferous. Culms 20-50 cm tall, slender, obtusely trigonous, smooth, leafy at lower part. Leaves much shorter than culm, blades 3-5 mm wide or wider, flat, slightly soft; sheaths brown, sometimes purplish red. Involucral bracts with long sheath and rather short blade. Spikes 2-4, usually 3, rather remote; terminal spike male, subclavate, 1-1.5 cm; lateral spikes female, oblong-cylindric or oblong, 1-2.5 cm, loosely several flowered; peduncles long and erect. Female glumes ferruginous-brown, broadly ovate, ca. 3 mm, membranous, green 3-veined, margins hyaline, apex obtuse or acute. Utricles yellow-green, obliquely patent, longer than glume, ovate, inflated trigonous, 4-6 mm, subleathery, glabrous, indistinctly veined, base broadly cuneate, apex abruptly narrowed into a short or medium-sized beak, orifice emarginate or 2-toothed. Nutlets rather loosely enveloped in utricle, obovate, trigonous, ca. 2.5 mm, base shortly stipitate; style base slightly thickened; stigmas 3. [details]
