Description Rhizomes short; shoots stout, densely tufted; roots thick, grey-brown; scales dark brown, remaining only as black fibres. Stems 30–100 cm, smooth below, rough above, sharply trigonous, their faces ± concave and angles winged. Leaves up to 80 cm × 4–10 mm, ± erect, acutely keeled, ± abruptly tapering to a flat, sharp point, dark green even when dry, not auriculate at base; hypostomous; inner face of sheaths glandular, transversely wrinkled and perforated with a vertical line of small holes; apex markedly lingulate; ligule 2–6 mm, truncate, shorter than width of leaf, its free margin overlapping the edges of the leaf-blade. Inflorescence a stout, dense panicle; bracts short, setaceous, with ± prominent dark auricles. Spikes numerous, 8–14 mm, compound, all or most male above and female below. Male glumes 3.5–4 mm, oblanceolate-elliptic, dark or rusty brown with a green midrib. Female glumes 4–5 mm, ovate, acuminate, dark or rusty brown; midrib indistinct. Utricles 4–5 mm, ovoid-ellipsoid, minutely papillose, only faintly nerved, readily dropping at maturity; epidermal cells of adaxial face thick walled, minutely papillous and ± isodiametric; beak 1–1.5 mm, split on back; stigmas 2; nut oblong-obovoid, biconvex. [details]
