Description Rhizomes short, with shoots forming dense tufts up to 30 cm across; roots yellow-brown and felty, and scales brown or reddish, rarely becoming fibrous. Stems 30–120 cm, stout and trigonous with slightly rounded faces. Leaves 15–60 cm × 5–12 mm, thin, shallowly keeled, plicate, abruptly tapered, smooth but with fine teeth on the edges and on the midrib below, bright green, turning brown and persisting when dead; hypostomous; sheaths persistent, distinctly veined, with hyaline areas between them when young, becoming brown with age, the inner face hyaline and flecked pink; apex convex or lingulate; ligule 7–15 mm, acute or obtuse. The inflorescence is 1/4–2/3 the length of the stem, with leaf-like bracts longer than the spike but not exceeding the inflorescence. Male spikes 1 or 2, 2–6 cm, with male glumes 5–6 mm, oblong-oblanceolate, pale orange-brown with red-brown flecks, margins and base hyaline, apex obtuse and mucronate or rarely long-acute. Female spikes 2–4, distant, 2–5 cm, ovoid-cylindric, ± erect, the lowest usually pendent; peduncles up to 80 mm and ensheathed; female glumes 3–5 mm, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, brown-hyaline and often with red-brown flecks, midrib green, apex acuminate and often rough at the tip. Utricles 4–6 mm, ovoid or subglobose, partially inflated, ± strongly ribbed, green with fine reddish dots, the beak 1.5 mm, ± scabrid and deeply bifid; stigmas 3; nut trigonous-globose. [details]

Description Densely tufted, with a robust rhizome. Fertile stems (40)50-100(120) cm tall, obtusely trigonous, smooth or slightly roughened in the upper region. Leaves (3)5-9(17) mm wide, shorter than the stems, smooth or somewhat roughened near the apex, flat or folded, not very rigid, medium to dark green, matte; ligule (6)9-20(40) mm, generally acute, width equal to or less than the blade; anteligule smaller than the ligule, generally obtuse; basal sheaths light brown, entire or slightly fibrous. Lower bract leafy, longer or shorter than the inflorescence. Male spike generally solitary, very rarely 2, measuring (15)25-45(64) × (2.5)3.5-4.5(6) mm, fusiform; female spikes 2-4, (15)25-40(57) × (3.5)6-8(10) mm, cylindrical, distant, ± pedunculate, the lower one generally pendulous. Male glumes oblong or obovate, ± acute, light brown; female glumes ± oval, acuminate, light brown. Utricles (3.3)4-5(5.8) × 1-2 mm, generally suberect, rarely spreading or spreading-erect, narrowly oval, many-nerved, gradually tapered to a bidentate, rough beak up to 2 mm long. Achenes 2.5-4.2 × 0.8-1.5 mm, elliptic in outline, trigonous. Chromosome numbers 2n = 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77*, 78, 80, 82, 84. [details]

Description Densamente cespitosa, con rizoma robusto. 2n = 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77*, 78, 80, 82, 84. [details]
