Leaves up to 25 cm × 1.5–4 mm, soft, thin, with c. 15 veins, ± flat, rough on margins toward abruptly tapered tip, young leaves with waxy bloom, soon becoming mid or apple green; hypostomous; sheaths becoming red-brown, persistent, inner face hyaline; apex concave; ligule 4–5 mm, acute, tubular. Inflorescence c. 1/5 length of stem; bracts leaf-like, yellow-green fading to brownish, lower usually exceeding inflorescence, lowest sheathing to 1 mm or less. Male spike 1, 10–20 mm; male glumes 5–6 mm, lanceolate-elliptic, pale red-brown, hyaline at margins; apex acute to acuminate. Female spikes 2–4, 5–18 mm, ovoid, lax and up to 10(–15)-flowered, upper ± erect at first, lower becoming nodding; peduncles smooth, 5–20 mm; female glumes 3–5(–6.5) mm, narrower than utricle, lanceolate, caducous, red- or purple-brown with slightly paler midrib; apex acuminate or cusped.
