Stems 2–20 cm, bluntly trigonous, ± leafless or with 3 very short leaves at the base. Leaves up to 15 cm × 1.5–4 mm, often recurved, papillose and somewhat rough on the upper surface, shiny, ± flat, tapered ± abruptly to a short trigonous point, mid green to yellow-green, serrulate with a narrow scarious margin, sometimes overwintering; hypostomous; sheaths herbaceous, becoming brown and fibrous, inner face hyaline; apex straight; ligule <1 mm, rounded, with minute, ± entire free margin. Inflorescence (1.5–)2–3 cm; bracts glumaceous, the lowest scarcely sheathing. Male spike 1, 10–15 mm, narrowly cylindrical; male glumes 2–3 mm, oblong, deep chestnut to purple-brown, with scarious, fringed margin and rounded apex. Female spikes 1–3, ± contiguous, 5–12 mm, ovoid, erect, sessile; female glumes 2–2.5 mm, rounded, deep chestnut, darkening through purple-brown to black, with scarious, fimbriate margin.
