Description Rhizomes shortly creeping, fleshy; shoots loosely tufted; roots pale grey- or purple-brown; scales grey-brown or colourless, soon decaying. Stems 10–60 cm, often curved above, trigonous-subterete, striate, with basal leaves as long as the stem. Leaves up to 60 cm × 1.5–5 mm, rough at top, ± flat, tapering to a trigonous point, glaucous on both sides (in dense fen sometimes more yellow-green), with few, conspicuous, widely spaced veins on the abaxial side, pale straw-coloured on dying; hypostomous; sheaths white or pale pink-brown, ribbed, not loose, persistent but fibrous on decay, with inner face hyaline, soon decaying; apex straight; ligule 1.5–2 mm, obtuse, with free portion 0.3–0.5 mm. Inflorescence 1/6–1/4(–1/3) length of stem; bracts leaf-like, shorter than inflorescence, tightly sheathed; sheaths 10–15 mm long. Male spike 1, 10–22 mm; male glumes 3–4.5 mm, ovate-oblong to elliptic, purple-brown, with pale midrib and hyaline margin; apex ± obtuse. Female spikes 1–3, 10–20 mm, ± distant, few and lax-flowered, with rachis usually visible; female glumes 3–4 mm, broadly ovate, clasping utricle, purple or red-brown, with pale green midrib and green-hyaline margin; apex acute. Utricles 3–4 mm, broadly obovoid, inflated on adaxial side so that the apex points outwards; olive-green or ± purple-tinged; beak < 0.5 mm, truncate; stigmas 3; nut oblong-obovoid, trigonous. Description Plants colonial, long-rhizomatous. Culms (0.8–)14–75 cm, smooth distally. Leaves: proximal sheaths with blades, pale brown, 3–6 mm thick; ligules 0.4–3.5(–8.5) mm, usually wider than long; leaf blades somewhat glaucous, flat, 5.5–33 cm × 1.4–4.7 mm, folded at bases, margins revolute, herbaceous. Inflorescences 3.2–21 cm, 1.7–3.5(–4.3) times as long as proximal bract; proximal bract (1.3–)2–9 cm, sheath 0.5–2.4 cm, blade 1.1–7.1 cm; pistillate spikes densely flowered, ovoid to cylindric, 0.8–2.9 cm × 4.5–7.5 mm; lateral spikes erect or ascending on stiff peduncles. Pistillate scales dark reddish purple with hyaline margins, green centers, apex obtuse, centers papillose. Perigynia ascending to spreading, yellowish green to brown, often suffused with reddish purple, broadly obovoid, 2.6–5.1 × 1.4–2.4 mm; beak minute, sharply bent. Achenes pale brown, 1.8–2.9 × 1.3–1.9 mm. 2n = 32. [details]
