Description Rhizomes shortly creeping; shoots often densely tufted; roots red-brown, very fine; scales pale brown or purplish-brown, becoming fibrous. Stems 10–30 cm, slender, stiff, terete. Leaves 5–25 cm, 0.5–1 mm, with c. 9 veins, ± stiff, keeled below, blunt at apex, dark green; hypostomous; sheaths becoming deep brown, ribbed, lower fibrous or soon decaying, with inner face hyaline and apex ± straight; ligule c. 0.5 mm, rounded. Inflorescence a single, few-flowered, terminal spike 10–25 mm, male above, female below; bracts absent. Male glumes 4.5–5 mm, oblong-elliptic, purple- or red-brown, with paler margins; apex obtuse or ± acute. Female glumes ± 3 mm, caducous, broadly lanceolate, red- or purple-brown, with midrib keeled and margins sometimes narrowly hyaline; apex acute or obtuse. Utricles 4–6 mm, ellipsoid or oblanceoloid, dark brown, shiny, usually deflexed at maturity on a short, stout pedicel and sensitive to touch (e.g., from a raindrop or insect), abscissing and ‘jumping’ away from the parent spike – hence the English name; beak 0.2 mm, slightly notched; stigmas 2; nut narrowly obovoid, biconvex, tapered to thick stalk. [details]

Description Laxamente cespitosa. 2n = 58, 60.* [details]

Translation Loosely cespitose. Stems (4)10–25(40) cm, bluntly trigonous or subcylindrical, smooth. Leaves 0.2–0.9 mm wide, shorter than or rarely longer than the stems, setaceous, channelled, smooth or slightly rough on the margins towards the apex; ligule up to 1 mm, with an obtuse or rounded apex; without an anteligule; basal sheaths with a developed blade or the lowest ones scale-like, entire or fibrous, brown. Lower bract glumaceous, enclosing a utricle. Spike 1–3 cm, with the male part linear and the female part lax-flowered, with (2)4–8(10) flowers. Glumes ± oval, acute or obtuse, brown, with a narrow central band slightly paler and only weakly contrasting with the rest of the glume, with a scarious margin, shorter than or equal in length to the utricles. Utricles 4–5 × 1–1.4 mm, fusiform in outline, biconvex or plano-convex, nerves usually not perceptible, reflexed, dark brown or ferruginous, gradually attenuated into a beak 0.3–0.5 mm long, smooth, ± truncate, split and scarious at the apex. Achenes 2.3–2.8 × 0.9–1.1 mm, obovoid or elliptic in outline, biconvex, olive-coloured. 2n = 58, 60.* [details]
