Description Laxamente cespitosa, con entrenudos no muy largos. Tallos 2,5–8(10) cm, trígonos, lisos o escábridos hacia el ápice. Hojas (0,8)1–2,5(3,1) mm de anchura, de longitud menor o raramente algo mayor que los tallos, ásperas en los bordes y el nervio medio del envés hacia el ápice, planas, muy papilosas, glaucas, ± blandas; lígula hasta 1,5 mm, de ápice obtuso o redondeado; sin antelígula; vainas basales con limbo desarrollado, a veces las más inferiores escuamiformes, enteras o algo rotas, pardas. Bráctea inferior foliácea, raramente setácea, de longitud mayor o menor que la inflorescencia, no cortamente envainante. Espigas 2–4, de 3,5–7(10) mm, anchamente ovoides, aproximadas o la inferior separada, frecuentemente subbasilar, la superior ginecandra, raramente masculina, el resto femeninas; las superiores sésiles o casi, las inferiores pedunculadas, erectas. Glumas ovales, agudas, negras, sin margen escarioso. Estigmas 3. Inflorescences: proximal bracts scalelike or leaflike, sheathless or with sheaths to 5 mm; lateral spikes with 5–25 perigynia, usually fastigiate, occasionally proximal distant, dense, 5–12 × 3.5–5.5 mm; middle internodes 0.2–0.4 mm; terminal spike gynecandrous, usually less than 1/3 of flowers staiminate, sessile, 6–11 mm, 1.1–1.8 mm wide in staminate portion. Pistillate scales ascending, ovate-circular, 1.9–2.5(–3) × 1.1–1.7 mm, apex obtuse, sometimes slightly mucronate. Staminate scales usually black or, rarely, dark brown with green midvein and hyaline margins, oblong-ovate, 2–3.5 mm, apex obtuse. Translation Loosely cespitose, with internodes not very long. Stems 2.5–8(10) cm, trigonous, smooth or scabrid towards the apex. Leaves (0.8)1–2.5(3.1) mm wide, shorter than or rarely slightly longer than the stems, rough on the margins and the abaxial midrib towards the apex, flat, very densely papillose, glaucous, ± soft; ligule up to 1.5 mm, with obtuse or rounded apex; no antiligule; basal sheaths with a developed blade, sometimes the lowermost scale-like, entire or somewhat torn, brown. Lower bract foliaceous, rarely setaceous, shorter than to longer than the inflorescence, not shortly sheathing. Spikes 2–4, 3.5–7(10) mm long, broadly ovoid, close together or with the lowermost separated, frequently subbasal; upper spike gynandrous, rarely male, the others female; upper spikes sessile or nearly so, the lower pedunculate, erect.
