Description Rhizomes short, woody, obliquely ascending. Culms tufted, lateral or central, 15–40 cm tall, compressed-trigonous, smooth, with persistent leaf sheaths at the base that are dark brown, dark purplish brown, or gray-brown, often splitting into fibers. Leaves longer or shorter than the culm; blades 4–12 mm wide, herbaceous, spreading, both surfaces smooth, margins scabrous. Bracts: lower ones short and leaf-like, nearly as long as the spikes; upper ones short leaf-like or bristle-like, shorter than spikes, with a sheath 1–3.5 cm long. Spikes 3–5, distant; terminal spike male, clavate-cylindrical, 1.5–6 cm long, 2–3 mm wide, with a 1.5–5 cm peduncle; lateral spikes female, sometimes with a few male flowers at the apex, cylindrical, 1.7–3.5 cm long, 3–4 mm wide, flowers densely arranged, lower spike peduncles slightly exserted from bract sheaths, upper ones enclosed. Male glumes oblanceolate, 6–8 mm long, pale yellow-brown or yellowish-white, apex with a short tip, midrib yellow. Female glumes long-ovate or ovate-oblong, 2–2.5 mm long, greenish-white or yellowish-white, apex with short tip or short awn, with three green veins. Perigynia broadly obovoid, obtusely trigonous, 2.5–3 mm long, equal to or slightly longer than female glumes, yellow-green or pale yellowish-green, membranous, many-nerved, glabrous, base gradually narrowed into a short stipe, apex narrowed into a 0.5–0.8 mm beak, beak margin with two small teeth. Achenes loosely enclosed in the perigynia, broadly obovoid or obovoid, trigonous, 1.5–2 mm long, brown, apex abruptly contracted into the annulus, middle of each face constricted, lower part sometimes depressed, base with a short stipe; style base thickened; stigmas 3. Description Rhizome obliquely ascending. Culms tufted, 15-35 cm tall, slender, compressed trigonous, smooth. Basal sheaths dark brown, split into fibers. Leaves longer or shorter than culm, blades 3-5 mm wide, flat, margins scabrid. Involucral bracts shortly leafy, shorter than inflorescence, long sheathed, sheath 1.2-2 mm. Spikes 3 or 4, spaced; terminal spike male, clavate-cylindric, 15-30 × 2-3 mm, with peduncle (0.5-)1.5-5 cm; lateral spikes female, cylindric, 17-30 × 3-4 mm, densely flowered; peduncle enclosed in involucral bract sheath but lowest one exserted. Female glumes pale, obovate-oblong, ca. 2.5 mm (excluding awn), green costa 3-veined, excurrent into a scabrid awn 1.5-2 mm, apex obtuse or rounded. Utricles pale green, longer than or equaling glume, sometimes slightly recurved, elliptic or obovate, ca. 3 mm, membranous, sparsely puberulent, many veined, base attenuate into a short stipe, apex attenuate into a short beak; beak conic, recurved, 2-toothed at orifice. Nutlet pale brown, tightly enveloped, obovate, trigonous, ca. 1.8 mm, base shortly stipitate, apex contracted into a short neck, neck apex discoid-annulate; style base conically thickened; stigmas 3.
