Description Rhizome short, slender. Culms tufted, median, 10–30 cm tall, trigonous, filiform, smooth or slightly scabrous, basal parts with purple-brown persistent leaf sheaths splitting into fibers. Leaves longer than or shorter than culms; blades 0.5–2.5 mm wide, herbaceous, inrolled, margins scabrous. Bracts spathe-like or bristle-like, shorter than spikes, with sheaths 0.6–1.2 cm long. Spikes 2 or 3, distant; terminal spike male, clavate, 0.8–1.2 cm long, ca. 1 mm wide, with a peduncle at base; lateral spikes female, slender cylindric, 0.7–1.5 cm long, ca. 2 mm wide, flowers somewhat densely arranged, peduncles filiform, exserted beyond bract sheaths. Male glumes oblong-oblanceolate, 5.5–6.5 mm long, pale purple-brown or yellow-brown, apex obtuse with a small point, with 1 green midvein on the back. Female glumes obovate or obovate-oblong, 2.6–3 mm long, pale yellow, apex acute, sometimes with a short awn, with 3 green midveins on the back. Utricles obovoid, obtusely trigonous, 3–3.2 mm long, nearly as long as female glumes, pale yellow-green, membranous, with indistinct fine veins, pubescent with short hairs, base gradually narrowed into a short stipe, apex gradually contracted into a beak ca. 0.6 mm long, mouth truncate. Nutlet tightly enclosed in utricle, obovoid, trigonous, ca. 2 mm long, chestnut-brown, apex abruptly contracted into an annulus, base with a short stipe; base of style thickened; stigmas 3. [details]

Description Rhizome slender. Culms tufted, (6-)10-50 cm tall, hairlike, trigonous, soft, smooth or slightly scabrid. Basal sheaths purple-brown, split into reticulate fibers. Leaves longer or shorter than culm, blades hairlike, 0.5-3 mm wide, involute at margins, scabrid. Involucral bracts ± spathelike, shorter than subtending spike, sheathed. Spikes 2 or 3, spaced; terminal spike male, pale brown, linear, ca. 10 × 1 mm, with peduncle 2.8-3.3 cm; lateral spikes female, narrowly cylindric, 7-14 × ca. 2 mm, with a few rather loose flowers, with hairlike peduncle 1.5-2.5 cm. Female glumes yellow-brown, oblong or oblong-ovate, ca. 3 mm (including mucro), costa scabrid, excurrent into a mucro, apex obtuse or truncate. Utricles dark green, equaling glume, elliptic or oblanceolate-elliptic, obtusely trigonous, ca. 3 mm, densely and shortly hirsute, indistinctly veined, base shortly stipitate, apex abruptly contracted into a beak, orifice truncate. Nutlet gray-black at maturity, tightly enveloped, obovate-oblong, obtusely trigonous, ca. 2 mm, base shortly stipitate, apex discoid-annulate; style base thickened; stigmas 3.  [details]
