Description Laxamente cespitosa, con rizoma de entrenudos largos. Tallos (20)30–90 cm, trígonos, generalmente lisos. Hojas 0,8–2,5(3,5) mm de anchura, de longitud igual o mayor que los tallos, la del tercio inferior de los tallos tiene el limbo muy corto, ásperas en los bordes a lo largo de toda su longitud, planas, raramente canaliculadas, medianamente rígidas; lígula hasta 1,2 mm, de ápice redondeado, truncado o emarginado; sin antelígula; vainas basales escuamiformes, enteras o algo rotas, pardas, rojizas o púrpuras. Bráctea inferior folíácea, de menor longitud que la inflorescencia, envainante. Espiga masculina solitaria, raramente 2, de 22–44 mm, ± lineal; espigas femeninas (1)2–3, de (8)15–30(33) mm, erectas o a inferior colgante, ± cilíndricas, laxifloras, separadas o las 2 superiores algo solapadas, largamente pedunculadas. Glumas masculinas estrechamente obovadas u oblongas, de ápice obtuso, agudo o cortamente mucronado, de color pardo rojizo o pajizas, sin margen escarioso; glumas femeninas ovales, muticas o cortamente mucronadas, de color pardo claro, pardo-rojizo o pardo-púrpura, generalmente con margen escarioso, de menor longitud que los utrículos. Utrículos 4–6,1 × 1,2–1,5 mm, erectos o suberectos, de contorno estrechamente oval, trígonos, con varios nervios marcados, generalmente pubescentes en la zona superior, verdosos, rojizos o parduscos, gradualmente atenuados o algo bruscamente estrechados en un pico de 0,9–1,5 mm, recto, de ápice generalmente escarioso, irregularmente roto, escábrido. Aquenios 1,8–2,5 × 1–1,4 mm, de contorno obovado, trígonos, de color pardo oscuro. 2n = 24. [details]

Translation Laxly caespitose, with long-internoded rhizomes. Stems (20)30–90 cm, trigonous, generally smooth. Leaves 0.8–2.5(3.5) mm wide, equal to or longer than the stems, those of the lower part of the stems with a very short blade, rough on the margins along their length, flat, rarely channelled, moderately rigid; ligule up to 1.2 mm, apex rounded, truncate or emarginate; without anteligule; basal sheaths scalelike, entire or slightly fibrous, brown, rusty or purplish. Lower bract foliaceous, shorter than the inflorescence, sheathing. Male spike solitary, rarely 2, 22–44 mm, ± linear; female spikes (1)2–3, 6–8(15) cm, erect or nodding, cylindrical, lax-flowered, set apart from each other by overlapping bracts, well pedunculate. Female glumes ovate to oblong, apex obtuse or mucronate, brown to rusty-brown or straw-coloured, without hyaline margin; male glumes ovate, mucronate or shortly mucronate, brown to rusty-brown or purplish, generally without hyaline margin, shorter than the utricles. Utricles 4–6 × 1–2.5 mm, erect or suberect, narrowly ovate, trigonous, with several marked nerves, generally pubescent in the upper part, green, rusty or brownish, gradually attenuate or rather abruptly narrowed into a beak 0.9–1.5 mm long, straight, apex generally scabrid, irregularly notched.
