Description Perennial (or annual), (15–) 20–50 (–80) cm tall. Rhizomes ca. 1 cm long, 2–4 mm in diameter, indurate, oblique, clothed with fibrous scale remnants. Culms 1–12, 1.0–2.5 mm in diameter, trigonous, ciliate-scabrous on the angles, especially distally. Leaves 2–6, (10–) 20–30 (–60) cm long, 3–6 (–8) mm wide, v-shaped, the margins and keel scabrous. Inflorescence bracts 3–7, (2–) 6–20 (–27) cm long, (1–) 2–5 (–6) mm wide, v-shaped, the margins and keel scabrous, ascendent at 30–45°. Rays 3–8, (1.5–) 3–6 (–12) cm long; secondary rays absent. Spikes (12–) 15–20 (–24) mm long, loosely ovoid; rachis (3–) 5–13 mm long, ciliate-scabrellate on the angles. Spikelets (4–) 20–35 (–50), 6–14 mm long, 2.4–3.5 mm wide, oblong-lanceolate, compressed-quadrate; rachilla deciduous, ca. 0.2 mm wide, 0.1 mm thick, slightly flexuous, stramineous to greenish, successive scales 2.0–2.6 mm apart, wings 0.3–0.4 mm wide, hyaline. Scales deciduous, (4–) 5–8 (–12), (3.8–) 4.0–4.5 (–4.7) mm long, 2.2–2.8 mm wide, ovate-lanceolate, apex acute, mucronulate, laterally 3–4-nerved, stramineous to bronze-colored, medially 3–5-nerved, ciliate-scabrellate along the midvein, green. Stamens 3; filaments 4.0–4.7 mm long; anthers 0.6–0.8 mm long, linear, the connective apex not prolonged. Style 0.8–1.2 (–1.6) mm long; stigmas 3, 1.6–2.6 mm long. Achenes 1.8–2.3 mm long, 1.0–1.2 mm wide, trigonous, ovoid to very broadly ellipsoid, apex broadly obtuse, apiculate, base cuneate to stipitate, 0.1–0.2 mm long, (0.2–) 0.3–0.4 mm wide, the faces flat or slightly concave, the surface finely papillose, dull brown to reddish brown.
