Description Rhizomes stout, shortly creeping. Stems 15–40 cm × 1–1.5 mm, densely clustered, ± terete, smooth to minutely ridged when dry, minutely striate or dotted, often recurved. Leaves reduced to bladeless sheaths up to 9.5 cm long, pale yellowish or brownish to purplish; apex obliquely acute. Inflorescence a single, terminal, ovoid, lanceoloid-ovoid or ellipsoid spikelet, 5–15 × 2–4 mm, often viviparous. Glumes 2.5–5(–7) × 1.2–1.8(–2.2) mm, c. 10–30 per spikelet, ovate-lanceolate, obtuse to acute, with dark reddish-brown sides, paler and often striate towards the base, with green or indistinct midrib; the lowest glume empty, c. 1/4 as long as the spikelet, not completely surrounding its base. Flowers bisexual; perianth bristles 4–6, longer than nut; stamens 3, with their anthers 1.9–2.3 mm long; stigmas 3. Nuts 1.2–1.5 × 0.8–1 mm, narrowly obovoid, trigonous, yellowish-brown to olive-brown; style-base triangular, trigonous, acute, constricted at base, not confluent with nut. [details]

2n = 20. Translation Perennial, densely cespitose; roots very robust, frequently straw-coloured. Stems (2)12–30(55) cm × (0.25)0.5–1(1.5) mm in diameter, straight or slightly curved, striate when dry, green, sometimes glaucous. Sheaths herbaceous, whitish toward the base, occasionally reddish or ochraceous; the uppermost obliquely truncate, sometimes with a narrow hyaline rim, ending in a ± conspicuous, often somewhat darkened mucro. Spikelet (4)8–12(18) mm long, ovate to lanceolate in outline, with (8)14–30(40) flowers, frequently pseudoviviparous—among the glumes, from gemmae, small plantlets develop that may even flower on the mother plant. Glumes (2.5)3–4(5) mm, helically arranged, ovate-lanceolate, apex acute to obtuse, green in the centre and reddish-brown to brown on the sides, with broad scarious margins; the lowermost glume (2)2.5–3(4) mm, with a subacute to obtuse apex, sterile, enclosing the base of the spikelet. Stamens 3; anthers 1.25–2.5(3) mm, apiculate, reddish to yellowish, in the latter case often with a red-tinged mucro. Style (1.5)2–3 mm, with 3 stigmas, reddish, persistently or tardily deciduous. Achenes 1.2–1.5 × 0.7–1(1.2) mm, narrowly obovoid to subpyriform, trigonous, finely reticulate, green to greenish-brown; occasionally with three faint longitudinal ribs, appearing dorsally ancipitate. Stylopodium 0.2–0.5 × 0.5(0.7) mm, pyramidal, constricted at the base, with basal vertices forming broad decurrent lobes along the angles of the achene; perianth bristles 3(4)5(6), as long as or shorter than the achene, retrorsely scabrous, reddish. 2n = 20.
