Description Rhizomes short. Stems 20–70 cm 1–2 mm, loosely tufted, erect, smooth, nodose, triquetrous. Leaves basal and cauline; blade 2–60 cm 3–8 mm, linear, narrowed to a triquetrous apex, otherwise flat, yellowish- to bluish green; sheaths less than 12 cm long (to 5 cm on cauline leaves), close-fitting, pale to mid brown; lower leaves with a rounded ligule with free portion 0.5 mm; uppermost cauline leaf with a well developed blade about equalling sheath and no ligule. Inflorescence terminal, comprising 2–12 pedunculate spikelets, ± nodding in fruit; peduncles up to 5 cm long, slender, rough with dense, minute, forward-pointing, stiff hairs (best detected when peduncle is drawn between the lips); involucral bracts 2–3, leaf-like to glume-like, sheathing, the lowest ± equalling or exceeding the lowermost spikelet. Spikelets ovoid to ellipsoid when young, soon becoming obscured by the lengthening perianth bristles. Glumes 5–6 1–2.1 mm, spirally arranged, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, the upper narrower than the lower, ± acute, membranous, 1-nerved, greyish-brown to blackish above, somewhat olivaceous below; margins narrowly hyaline. Flowers bisexual; perianth bristles many, minutely papillose at the apex, elongating to 2–2.5 cm and forming a neat, almost ‘brilliant’ white, cotton-like head; stamens 3; anthers 1.3–2 mm long; stigmas 3. Nuts 3–3.5 reddish-brown, ± smooth. [details]
