Description Plants colonial from long-creeping rhizomes. Culms solitary or few together, 5–35(–70) cm, usually not more than 1 mm diam. basally; basal sheaths persistent, brown or reddish, septate-nodulose. Leaves: blades channeled or strongly involute, 3–12 cm; distal leaves usually bladeless with black-tipped sheath. Inflorescences: involucre absent. Spikelets solitary, erect, broadly obovoid to subglobose in fruit, 8–12(–40) mm; scales gray to blackish green; proximal empty scales not more than 7, ovate, 4–10 mm, midrib not reaching tip; distal scales narrower, more attenuate, margins hyaline, not more than 1 mm wide. Flowers: perianth bristles 10 or more, bright white, sometimes red-tinged, 15–30 mm, smooth; anthers 0.5–1.5 mm. Achenes narrowly oblong, 0.4–2.5 mm, apex with subulate beak. 2n = 58. [details]

Hojas basales escasas, de (2)4-12(16) × 0,1-0,2 cm, planas o ± acanaladas, flexibles; hoja caulinar única dispuesta en la mitad inferior, con el limbo reducido, hasta de 5-7 mm, y la vaina de 2-4 cm, aplicada al tallo; vainas basales con limbo desarrollado, escasas. Inflorescencia reducida a una espiguilla terminal, subglobosa; brácteas 1-2, glumiformes, provistas de 3-5(7) nervios. Glumas (4)5-7(9) mm, lanceoladas, negruzcas, con (1)3 nervios y margen escarioso estrecho. Anteras c. 1 mm. Translation Perennial, with long-internode rhizomes measuring (2)3–9(12) cm, serpentine, with fine roots up to 7(9) cm long. Stems 15–30(40) cm, cylindrical. Basal leaves few, (2)4–12(16) × 0.1–0.2 cm, flat or slightly channeled, flexible; a single cauline leaf positioned on the lower half of the stem, with the blade reduced to up to 5–7 mm and the sheath 2–4 cm long, appressed to the stem; basal sheaths with developed blades, scarce. Inflorescence reduced to a single terminal spikelet, subglobose; bracts 1–2, glume-like, with 3–5(7) veins. Glumes (4)5–7(9) mm, lanceolate, blackish, with (1)3 veins and a narrow scarious margin. Anthers about 1 mm. Achenes about 3 mm, ovoid, subtrigonous, dark brown, with the base of the style persistent in the form of a short column; perianth bristles 1–2.5 cm long in fruit. 2n = 58*.
