Description Plants cespitose, tussock forming. Culms 10–60 cm; basal sheaths brown. Leaves: bladeless sheaths 1–3 per culm, expanding distally, to 1 mm wide; blades filiform, trigonous, not more than 1 cm. Inflorescences: involucral bracts absent. Spikelets solitary, erect, globose-subglobose to ovoid-oblong, 10–20 mm in flower, to 50 mm in fruit; scales lead-colored to greenish gray with white-hyaline margins to 1 mm wide; empty scales more than 10, ovate-lanceolate; proximal scales reflexed or spreading at maturity, 5–10 mm. Flowers: perianth bristles 10 or more, white, seldom reddish or brown, 10–18 mm, smooth; anthers 1–3 mm. Achenes ovoid to obovoid, 1.9–3.5 mm, apex minutely apiculate. 2n = 58, 60. [details]

Description Rhizomes short, forming compact tussocks. Stems (15–)30–60(–80) cm 0.8–1.5 mm, tufted, erect, smooth, nodose in lower half only, triquetrous above, terete below. Leaves basal and cauline; blade 3–50 cm 0.4–0.8 mm, linear to ± setaceous, narrowed to an obtuse apex, ± triquetrous, yellowish- to bluish-green; sheaths up to 12 cm long (to 6 cm on cauline leaves), close fitting, becoming fibrous on basal leaves, strongly inflated and pale to mid brown on cauline leaves, the uppermost sheath without a blade or with blade much reduced; ligule 0. Inflorescence a single, terminal, erect spikelet; involucral bracts 0. Spikelet ovoid to ellipsoid when young, soon becoming obscured by the lengthening perianth bristles. Glumes spirally arranged, ovate-lanceolate, 6–7 1.5–2.2 mm, acuminate, membranous, 1-nerved, translucent mid to dark greyish, with margins hyaline, the lower 5–15 glumes sterile and often darker. Flowers bisexual or male-sterile with abortive stamens; perianth bristles many, entire at apex, elongating to 2–2.5 cm and forming a white, cotton-like head; stamens 3; anthers 1.5–2 mm long; stigmas 3. Nuts 2–3 1–1.5 mm, obovoid, trigonous, dull yellowish-brown to dark brown, ± smooth. [details]
