Description Rhizomes creeping. Stems 30–120 cm 4–8 mm, erect, trigonous to triquetrous above, terete below. Leaves basal and up to 7 cauline, up to 40 cm 5–20 mm, acuminate, ± flat; ligule absent; basal sheaths pale to chestnut brown; cauline sheaths greenish-brown; vegetative shoots forming a pseudostem. Inflorescence terminal, branched, somewhat umbel-like, 10–25 × 10–25 cm; primary branches 3 to 8, up to 10 cm long, unequal; secondary and tertiary branches up to 5 cm long. Spikelets in finger-like to ± globose clusters of 3–10, 2.5–6 × 2–3 mm, ovoid to oblong-ovoid, obtuse, rarely subacute, dark brown; involucral bracts 2–4, up to 50 cm long. Glumes 1.2–2.5 × 1–1.5 mm, ovate to ± orbicular, obtuse, ± mucronulate, membranous. Flowers bisexual; perianth bristles 6, shorter than glume, scaberulous above; stamens 2–3; stigmas 3. Nuts 0.7–1 × 0.5–0.8 mm, obovoid to subglobose, compressed-trigonous, pale brown, smooth. [details]

2n = 62*, 64*. [details]
