Spikes 2.3–8.0 cm × 6.8–9.1 mm, oblong to linear, densely flowered, the distal 1/5–1/2 staminate, unbranched, with about 80–>200 female flowers, peduncles smooth or scabrous, mostly shorter or, the lowest, longer than the spikes. Pistillate glumes 3.6–4.7 × 0.9–1.8 mm, narrowly oblong to lanceolate, gradually acute, brown to dark purple to dull black with a pale stra-mineous middle longitudinal strip and apex, with a scabrous awn, hyaline margins narrow or absent. Stigmas 3. Utricles 2.8–4.1 × 0.9–1.6 mm, shorter or equaling the glumes, elliptic, stramineous to brown, ripening dark purple to almost black, lat-eral nerves conspicuous, the other nerves more or less evident, obtusely trigonous to compressed biconvex, constricted at the apex into a 0.3–0.7 mm long straight beak, shortly bidentate or truncate, teeth 0.1–0.2 mm long. Nutlets 1.6–2.3 × 0.9–1.5 mm, elliptic to obovate; style strongly lignified, leaving a cylindrical, 0.2 mm long remnant at the apex of the nutlet. [details]
