Description Rhizomes short, woody. Culms tufted, lateral, 40–55 cm tall, trigonous, robust, smooth, with brown or dark brown persistent leaf sheaths at the base, sometimes splitting into fibers. Leaves shorter or longer than culms; leaf blades 4–7 mm wide, leathery, flat, with small transverse partitions, abaxial surface and upper margin scabrous. Bracts setaceous, sheathing; sheaths 0.5–3 cm long, pale brown or purple-brown. Spikes 4–6, distant; terminal spike male, clavate-cylindric, 3.5–4.5 cm long, ca. 3.5 mm wide, with a long peduncle at base; lateral spikes female, cylindric, 2.5–4 cm long, 4–4.5 mm wide, flowers somewhat dense, peduncle usually slightly exserted from or enclosed in the bract sheath. Male glumes oblong-lanceolate, 6–7 mm long, yellow-brown to dark brown, apex obtuse or acute, midvein yellow-green. Female glumes narrowly oblong-ovate or elliptic-ovate, 3.5–4 mm long, pale green or pale yellow-brown, apex gradually acuminate, with 3 yellow-green veins on back prolonged into a short awn. Utricles fusiform-ovoid, obtusely trigonous, 4–5 mm long, slightly longer than female glumes, pale greenish-brown, membranous, with many conspicuous fine veins, sparsely short-pubescent, narrowed at base into a stipe, apex gradually narrowed into a beak ca. 1 mm long, beak mouth with 2 small teeth. Nutlets tightly enclosed by utricles, ovoid, trigonous, 2.5–3 mm long, gray-brown, apex abruptly constricted into an annular disk or the disk slightly inconspicuous, base with a short stipe; base of style slightly thickened; stigmas 3.
