Description Culms 45–110 cm × 4–5 mm. Basal sheaths reddish-brown. Leaves 35–121 cm × 5.1–8.0 mm largest ones, subequal or longer than the culms, oldest ones orangey-brownish at the base. Inflorescence racemose sometimes bearing smaller spikes on the base of the branches, 17.0–25.2(34.0) cm long, with 20–45(65) androgynous spikes, spreading or dropping. Proximal-most bract 10.5–35.0(55.3) cm × 2–7(13) mm, usually longer than the inflorescence. Spikes 2.6–6.6 cm × 3.8–9.7 mm, linear to oblong, densely flowered, the distal tip staminate, unbranched or 1-branched, with about 60–190 female flowers, peduncles smooth, mostly shorter than the spikes. Pistillate glumes 4.6–5.5 × 1.1–1.3 mm, lanceolate to ovate, acute, muticu-ous, purplish-black with a light-green middle longitudinal strip, hyaline margins extremely narrow or absent, when present all along the glume. Stigmas 2. Utricles 2.6–3.4 × 0.9–1.3 mm, elliptic, hispid on its upper third, greenish, nerves raised, constricted at the apex into a 0.4–0.8 mm long straight beak, ciliolate, conspicuous-ly bifid, teeth (0.1)0.2–0.4 mm. Nutlets 1.4–2.1 × 0.4(0.6)–1.0 mm, elliptic, not in-vaginated or just slightly curved. [details]
